MY TOP TEN CHOICES OF CITIES WHERE I WOULD WANT TO OPEN A LUXURY HOTEL AND BE INTIMATELY INVOLVED IN THE CREATION OF THE FOOD & BEVERAGE FACILITIES.
The recent selection of the Top Ten Food Cities in the World by Forbes Magazine was so wrong that I decided to do my own.
These are based on the variety and quality of their restaurants & street food, the character, flavours and choices of food in their food markets and most important of all, the culture of good, nutricious, tasty meals for the general population on a daily basis.
I also decided that since too many great cuisines of the world fall outside of my Top Ten, that I would only choose one city per country (note that Forbes had 3 cities in the USA). The reason for this is that anyone taking my advice from this Blog and choosing Paris as a food destination, probably has the good sense to travel to Lyon or Marseille or both, once they are in the area.
For the benefit of those that have their own list of cities that do not appear on this list, I am adding some 'near miss' cities that came close but failed. My subjective reasons will be provided.
Here however is my own choice of Great Food Destinations, whether you are visiting a local family, as a tourist or as a culinary voyeur. Bon Appetit! For restaurant reservations, call a friend. All of them are worth travelling to for no other reason than food.
- Paris. Classic, unchanged, unadulterated.
- Hongkong. The best of the East & the best of the West. Just the best.
- Mexico City. Regional differences, colour, texture & wild tastes.
- Rome. Traditional, simple, savoury & unchangeable.
- Barcelona. Mediterranean, Catalan with a touch of Spain
- Bangkok. Spices, colours, textures and nutricious.
- New Delhi. Steamy, multi-flavoured, traditional & unchanged.
- San Francisco. Daring, leading edge, artistic and dramatic.
- Brussels. Not French, not Viennese, not even Belgian, just culinary.
- Kuala Lumpur. Malay, Indian, Chinese and spicy.
Here are the 'near misses' that made the list for one or more reasons but failed for the reasons given. They are all however worth driving 100 miles to for a meal......or two.
- London. Locals eat plain & tasteless. Over to you Jamie!!
- New York. Too often locals & visitors eat fast food.
- Chongqing. 30 million locals eat well......restaurants, not enough yet.
- New Orleans. Stunned momentarily by Katrina...seeya later.
- Dublin. Locals eat plain.....when they eat.
- Chicago. Great restaurants for 'out of towners'. Locals eat hamburger or steaks.
- Sydney. Anglo-Asian fusion. Anglo locals eat plain & tasteless.
- Montreal. Ten out of Ten for everything, except 'poutine' which ruined the lot!!
- Cairo. Undecided whether it is Middle Eastern or European....love it!
There is another group of cities that are on my 'watch list'. These are the cities that are located in great food cultures and/or cater to a growing body of well-heeled visitors.
- Macao. Over the top.
- Saigon. French, Asian and exploding.
- Dubai. Spectacular.
