WHAT ARE THE TEN MOST LUXURIOUS PERKS OF A GENERAL MANAGER IN AN UPSCALE HOTEL OR RESORT?
Living the life of an Ambassador or even a Rockstar is the lifestyle of those General Managers who are lucky enough to have been awarded a position in an upscale hotel or resort. There are many small things that are indeed luxuries. Here are my Top Ten.
I can not speak for all GM's, but these were some of my favourites.
- Home Chores delegatable. Laundry, cutting the lawn, minor repairs, painting, vacuuming are all done at the drop of a button.
- Unlimited Culinary choices..... & Room Service. Whatever you want, whenever you want it.
- Ambassadorial Expense Account. Virtually unlimited expenses checking out the competition.
- Vertical or Ambulatory Commute. An elevator down to the lobby or a stroll over from the Manager's house.
- No Green or Court Fees. Tennis or golf lessons from the Pro?
- Reliable Child Care. Caring, knowledgable help from dozens of staff willing to help.
- Chauffeurs. No need to fight for a parking spot or the heat of a broiled car when the limo is gased up and ready for you day or night.
- International (and local) friendships. Hundreds of kindred spirits around the world ready to roll out their red carpet for you and the family.
- Five-Star Lifestyle. A luxury suite, the best table, a favourite dish by the chef, fresh flowers daily and butlers, housekeepers, gardeners............ and VIPs to entertain.
- Dreaming up reality. The freedom to dream up a future guest amenity, a service, a perk and then test-drive it first.
Yes, life is great for those that can take it. What many fail to recognise are that there are some sacrifices that one pays for these perks and unless they are pointed out to an aspiring hotelier before he starts, there will be some unpleasant surprises. Here are those things that we must accept as part of the territory,
- 24/7 Life. It is indeed true that a GM's work is never over. there is no such thing as a real day-off, a time when that telephone can not ring and when there is not an issue that should demand your attention. One can pretend to be off-duty, leave strict instructions on the reasons when you can be called in the suite, but in truth, your mind and body is in fact 'in-gear' and ready at all times. For one that treated the job as a lifestyle, what's the big deal?
- On Stage. When one is out front, one is on-stage. No excuse for dressing down, or not at all. At all times, one is on stage for both employees and guests. When it's your hobby, who cares?
- Homeless. From one gorgeous assignment to another and with no official home address, the opportunity to put down roots, plant a tree, sow some seeds will have to wait for later. Our 10 year old son used to ask after a couple of years....."where next?".
- Vulnerability. Similar to a sports coach, a GM is expendable at the drop of a hat. Could be the whim of an owner, the management company or just a new boss. No need to take it personally, that's life!!
- Friendless. Arriving in a new destination is tough to start but the nature of the business throws one together with other GMs, locally based expatriates and hundreds of great visitors every day.
I wouldn't have missed a minute and would do it all again in a heartbeat.
