CANADA.....ONE OF THE WORLD'S TOP DESTINATIONS, BUT DOESN'T WANT TO ADMIT IT.
A Paradise by any comparison. Heaven on Earth....Good will to all Men. Good fun for all Women too! By any measure USPs need to be extreme or exaggerated, like Parisian Architecture, French food , Italian fashion, Irish pubs, Cuban music, Brasilian dancers or Trinidadian Carnival.
By any measure Canada has what it takes in its' extremes to become one of the Top Five Destinations on the world stage. Strategically located within a few hours of Europe, Asia and the Americas, this huge, peaceful combination of every culture in the world has all it takes except 'cojones' to tell the world where to go............except when we are on the hockey rink.
Now if we could just get our hockey players to help us out in the area of tourism development, our competitors would be against the boards!!
Blessed with Seven Wonders of its own representing 'major world-class destinations' see http://www.cbc.ca/sevenwonders/, this gentle giant of a country rests on its laurels and fails, time after time, to aggressively develop additional tourism products.
Here are my Top Ten Reasons to Visit Canada and where.
- Extreme Space (Go to Saskatchewan, turn left or right........then sigh!!!)
- Extreme Festivals (Anywhere in Summer or an NFL hockey game at half-time)
- Extreme Peace (Everywhere....or with our world renowned Peacekeepers)
- Extreme Entertainment (Queen Street, Crescent Street, John St, 7th Ave, Harbourfront)
- Extreme Nature (Newfoundland or BC.....or anywhere in between)
- Extreme Sports (Any hockey rink in winter, any whitewater river in Spring, Whistler anytime, cross-Canada biking, cross-Province snowmobiling, Stampede)
- Extreme Food (St Lawrence Market, Atwater Market....Danforth, St Laurent blvd, Chinatown)
- Extreme Culture (Baie St Paul, Group of Seven, Toronto Cricket Club, Ann of Green Gables, Symphony, Stanstead Opera House, Toronto, Stratford & Niagara on the Lake theatres)
- Extreme Kindness (Afghanistan, St Catherine St, Yonge St, Bas-Ville, Banff, PEI)
- Extreme Non-American ( Houses of Parliament. This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Gun Registry, Multiculturism, Bi-Lingualism, -isms)
Sure Canada is blessed with a whole slew of major world destinations that include Niagara Falls, Banff, Tremblant, Whistler, but most if not all suffer from some saturation during some of the year and need some help in the area of Congestion Management.
What really needs to happen however or so Canadian Tourism Execs were told by the Japanese some fifteen years ago, "Give us some new product Canada, there's no space left in those other spots! and our people want to see the real Canada".
What we need is product development. The simple marriage of simple experiences for non-Canadians. Something as simple as a tour of a few churches, a fruit market, a flea market, picnic in a park and a AA Hockey game with a stay in a B&B. Canoeing, hiking and bicycling clipped to some local wines or local brews...music in a park, a school concert, street performers or a fireworks exhibition. Anything that is simply .......Canadian.
Canada already enjoys the benefits of a public private partnership for tourism promotion, the CTC is the envy of countless countries...... including our neighbour to the south. We already are renowned for our creativity in countless industries and sectors.
All we now need is a little creativity in the 'product development' department to take Canadian tourism to the next level.
But isn't that just the case everywhere?!
