THAI HOTEL ASSOCIATION, FACED WITH AN ALCOHOL CONTROL BILL ORGANISES ROAD SHOW TO RUSSIA TO SEEK BUSINESS!!
The marketing logic of the Thai Hotel Association's announcement that the new Bill, if enacted for the comprehensive control of alcohol consumption, advertising & restricted sale of alcohol within districts that have schools & temples, led to the decision to promote Thailand in Russia, one of the world's largest consumers of alcohol.
Seems to me that these two stories do not belong together.
QUOTE "The Thai Hotels Association-Eastern Chapter (THA-EC), led by its president Chatchawal Supachayanont , recently held its members meeting at Pattaya Marriott Resort & Spa.
The hotel executives thrashed out significant issues that concern the hospitality industry such as the Alcohol Control Act and the drop of business in the past few months due to political uncertainty and security situation in the kingdom.
Hoteliers raised concern about the new alcohol control bill which once enacted would provide comprehensive control of alcohol consumption, ban advertisements for alcoholic drinks and prohibit the sale of alcoholic drinks within 200 meters of schools and temples. THA-EC has made a joint appeal with THA in Bangkok for the government to reassess the impact of the bill on the tourism industry and related businesses.
To promote Pattaya as a destination, THA-EC also reported that it is organizing a road show in Russia to increase tourist arrivals from the Russian market. The committee also reported the success of the association’s road show in ITB Berlin. " CLOSE QUOTE.
For my full two years as CEO of the International Hotel & Restaurant Association, I attempted to have the Thai Hotel Association join the IH&RA .......but failed. As one of Asia's most successful tourism destinations, they could not afford the US$5,400 fees although they could have benefited from the experiences of the rest of the world in the many challenges to their tourism industry.
I truly wish Thailand well as they seek to replace those tourists that they might lose from this odd Prohibition Era bill on alcohol......... from Russia, a country that itself suffers from its seemingly un-endless capacity for alcohol.
Of incidental importance but still relevant is the fact that most of the major hotel brands in the world are unaware of the global move involving the World Health Organisation to hold them and their owners responsible for alcoholism.
