EMPTY MUSEUMS, OPERA HOUSES, CONCERT HALLS, ART GALLERIES AND THEATRES MUST BECOME A THING OF THE PAST.
Went to a concert in Paris last year in a magnificent church and heard the most beautiful sounds of a visiting orchestral group competing in a European contest. There were 7 spectators. We paid nothing. Thousands traipsed by outside oblivious of the magic taking place inside.
Went to the Gran Teatro in Havana to hear an opera performed by some of their star performers.....it was one third empty. The tickets cost US$0.75 for all three of us. There were thousands of tourists in town and not one promotional effort that I could find in the major hotels.
It is sad to see such jewels of the local cultural community ignored or missed by the ears and eyes of those who are interested visitors and whose word of mouth would add most value.
Is there not a case to be made for the marriage of Tourism and the Arts? Several Nations have in fact made that connection but sadly not enough.
Why, instead of spending thousands of hard earned dollars abroad on tourism promotion, one could not utilise those tourists already here as genuine and enthusiastic spokespersons?
Why, instead of those seats going empty could the Ministry not coordinate distribution to the hoteliers as Ambassadorial Seats? At the very least, hotel guests or employees and their families could become extensions of the strategy to fill those empty seats and drive more tourists to those destinations where Art & Culture are so strong.
Surely every city on earth should be adopting the energetic and phrenetic London Theatre model of last minute tickets for every happening in town!! And ...."with prices starting at under £40 for cracking shows & top London hotels, you can still enjoy that midnight snack before hitting your room".
Yes, the time has come for Tourism to embrace the Arts and maybe one day soon, Havana's magnificent Gran Teatro can see the day when a full day's take for the whole show will exceed the cost of one London Show Ticket.
Destinations are made, managed & refined by public and private professionals working in harmony with the community's natural and man-made resources.
At least, that's my opinion..... [email protected]
