THE KIDS TOMORROW DON'T KNOW HOW LUCKY THEY WILL BE.
In 10-12 years, there will be space tourists only if there are space employees. For this we will need bartenders, cooks, housekeepers and tour guides.
As the industry struggles to find ways to attract employees to the industry and then keep them, I was forced to think back to my first task as a management trainee in which I was required to turn a huge block of ice into ice cubes with an ice pick and then deliver them to the hotel bars around the building.
Pitching forward to the 21st century, just imagine the difficulty that our successors will have in 20-30 years when they will be training as astronaut hoteliers to work in space in what many believe will be range of hotel products offering extraordinary experiences to clients and staff alike.
Only some 100kms from here, ice cube delivery will doubtless take on different challenges not the least of which will be keeping them grounded!
Will hoteliers in 2030 still suffer from the difficulties we face in attracting employees to our industry? Or will they be lined up to fill the positions in the spacebound cocktail lounges (Mars Bars) and special revolving (earth) restaurants for which they will doubtless need some additional skills?
Something tells me that recruitment in the 21st century will become harder and harder as fascinating alternatives open up in tourism worldwide.
How will you retain your best employees and make their lives as interesting as NASA?
